The place was indeed the Cannes Film Festival and the event was a luncheon to launch Pamela Anderson’s charitable foundation which is intended to further animal rights. She was with husband Rick Salomon and looking luminous as always and at age 46 continuing to amaze those who still cling to stereotypical notions of what women “of a certain age” look like.

But it was in her speech that Pamela Anderson stunned everyone. It was first reported by a variety of media and celebrity news outlets and thereafter Anderson herself posted the full transcript. She spoke of her first incidence of sexual abuse and prefaced, saying “I did not have an easy childhood. Despite loving parents, I was molested from age six by a female babysitter.”

She went on to speak of what happened a few years later: “I went to a friend’s boyfriend’s house and his older brother decided to teach me backgammon, which led into a back massage, which led into rape; my first heterosexual experience. He was 25 years old and I was 12.”

She went on to talk about the gang rape which happened when she was a teenager. As she revealed to the audience, her boyfriend, “decided it would be funny to gang-rape me with six friends.”

In the aftermath, Anderson said, “Needless to say I had a hard time trusting humans. I wanted off this earth.”

She went on to explain how she was able to survive such trauma, saying, “My affinity with animals saved me, they came to me naturally. The trees spoke to me. I wasn’t sure why I was alive — a burning question, a quest.”

She continued, “My loyalty remained with the animal kingdom. I vowed to protect them and only them. I prayed to the whales with my feet in the ocean, my only real friends until I had children.”

After the speech, she Tweeted a link to the full transcript, and said: “My speech at launch of my Namesake foundation. I want people to know – they can overcome and prosper with love…”

A powerful and courageous speech, but beyond that, a harrowing story of survival, both heartbreaking and inspirational. Aside from her worldwide success as an actress we have also long known Pamela Anderson as a fervent and tireless advocate for animals and animal rights. Now she has given us some insight into how and why the cause is so dear to her.
