The world was horrified by the images of extremists butchering a British soldier identified today as Lee Rigby (photos below), the cruelty of which will be difficult for any of us to grasp much less explain to his son and wife Rebecca Metcalfe Rigby (photos in gallery). Drummer Lee Rigby was identified the soldier who was cut down in Woolwich, located in south-east London, just yards from his army barracks.
See picture gallery below.
Lee Rigby’s wife was named in the British press as a beautiful woman named Rebecca Metcalfe. The couple were married in 2007 in the United Kingdom in West Yorkshire’s sleepy town of Southowram Halifax. They were separated at the time of the incident but were not yet divorced.
Beyond the shock, the saddest part for me is that the couple have a 2-year old baby boy who will grow up never to remember his father except through family stories and photographs. I am sure that the outpouring of sympathy will take care of his needs through college, but the absence of a biological father figure will always be a void in his life.
Rigby was a member of the Corps of Drummers for the 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. They issued a statement that reads “A loving father to his son Jack, aged 2 years, he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. The Regiment’s thoughts and prayers are with his family during this extremely difficult time.”
Rebecca Metcalfe’s parents are Paul and Susan Metcalfe. Their home has served as a gathering ground for Lee Rigby’s family members to grieve together. We will update this post with any information about donations and a trust fund for Rebecca and little Jack. I’m sure that many of our readers would be interested in helping the surviving family members.
We know very little about Rebecca and Lee Rigby’s son. Comments from readers who know them are welcomed.
