Earlier today, the first trailer for The Muppets was released and no one knew it. The marketing for the film is interesting to say the least. Instead of premiering the trailer directly, Disney set up a fake Facebook page, poster, and description for Green With Envy. It’s a romantic comedy that stars Amy Adams and Jason Segel.
Green With Envy is nothing more than a front for The Muppets, but you have to wait halfway through the trailer to figure it out. All of your favorites are back, Kermit, Miss Piggy, and even Fozzie Bear! Check out the trailer below.
Here’s the plot synopsis for the new Muppets via ComingSoon.
The focus of the story is Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Segel) and Mary (Adams), Together, they discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate.
Judging from the slow opening of this trailer you’d have no idea it was a Muppets movie. We were watching it wondering when it would start getting good. We think this footage was shot specifically for the trailer. Perhaps there are a few scenes in it from the actual movie but not all. The Muppets get seriously meta!
The Muppets open in theaters this Thanksgiving (November 23). Will you be there to watch?
